Literacy Champion Work

Hi 👋🏼

Bri here, and I just wanted to leave a little note about one of the things I love just as much if not more than general book-wormery… and that is sharing a love of reading and story with children and young people, and empowering them through literacy. It blows my mind reflecting on my growing up how books can be both portals for escape from reality, and a lens through which to better understand it; a fantasy exploring or offering alternative realities, and fictional ways of navigating or looking at our existing one. Not to mention the importance of literacy skills for our young people to equip them to enjoy life and thrive in practical as well as creative and more soulful senses. And the journey of supporting my children with phonics, literacy and reading has been an utter lesson, joy and delight. Being part of that journey feels like an immense privilege.

This is why I absolutely love volunteering as Literacy Champion for the National Literacy Trust – one of my favourite things to do with my daughters is make a “Book Fairy Drop” 🧚🏻 at local community book sharing libraries to make reading more accessible for everyone.

I’ve also loved volunteering supporting local book festival BookHeath.

Literacy for all is something I’m incredibly passionate about and I’ve spent a lot of time reading and working with children and young people – both volunteering in schools earlier in my career, and now supporting my own children.

I share more of our literacy and home based education support on Instagram (@brionywrites) (lots of games and fun, super quick, effective play based ways to support reading that get kids excited about reading and learning rather than viewing it as a chore).
